sophie:*singing a song she learned at vbs over the summer* "God is watching, watching over you. 24-7 watching over you......"
"mommy, is there more than one God?"

me: "no, honey. there's only one God."

sophie: "how can He watch over everybody all the time?"

me: *singing a song we had learned the night before at family bible time* "cuz my God is so BIG, so strong and so might. there's nothing my God cannot do!"

sophie: "He must have a lot of faces. i wonder what they look like."

me: "the Bible says that God doesn't have a face. not like us anyway. he isn't human. he doesn't have a body. we won't know what he looks like until we're in heaven."

sophie: "well when you get there, could you call and let me know what he looks like?"

me: "i don't think there are any phones in heaven."

sophie: "well as soon as you get there, just make one quick call on your cell phone to tell me really quick, then hang up!"

me: "i'll see what i can do ;) "

ABC's of Thankfulness

A: Austin. My firstborn. He is such a big help, I'm not sure how I'd get along without him most days.

B: Black Friday! Yes, I am one of those nuts that stands outside in the cold with strangers for hours in the dark with no sleep. In fact, this year, I didn't even need anything and I still went out just because it's my tradition.

C: Chris. My awesome hubby. My partner. I really and truely don't know how people raise kids or keep a home in tact without a spouse. I'd be hard-pressed to do anything without him!

D: Dough. Cookie dough, pizza dough, pie crust and homemade biscuits and rolls. I love baking and it really ramps up this time of year.

E: Elijah. My sweet baby boy. I never thought I'd have any more kids. Chris had "cut me off" in the baby department. God had other plans. And I'm so glad He did!

F: Feldkamps. I love the family I married into. They taught me what family is really supposed to be like.

G: God. Praise God from whom all blessings flow. God is good all the time!

H: Homeschooling. I can't express how much of a blessing it is to have my children with me all day, learning how to "do" life.

I: Indoor plumbing. Running water. A toilet. The little, everyday things that we take for granted.

J: Jesus. My redeemer. My Savior. My King. I met Him on Christmas Eve 2003 and my life has never been the same.

K: Kindle Fire! The only thing on my Christmas list this year.

L: Love. I am surrounded by love on a daily basis. I am striving to show it more often to everyone around me.

M: Maggie. My little Maggie. I thought she was my last and I spoiled her accordingly. She still turned out to be a great big sister! She is so sweet and I will always have a special bond with her because she was my first long-term nursed baby.

N: Naps. (which I don'y get often enough, but I'm very thankful when I do!)

O: Our home. It's not much, it needs lots of TLC and it's pretty small for 7 people, but it's home. It keeps us dry and warm and safe. As long as my family's in it, there's nowhere I'd rather be.

P: Pastors. I'm thankful for the pastors, leaders and members of our church. It is an imperfect church, filled with imperfect people. So I fit in nicely ;)

Q: Quiet times. They don't come often, which makes me cherish them even more. You know that point when all the kids are first settled into bed for the night and you sit down and there is just silence? I love that moment.

R: Running vehicles. Like our home, they aren't much; but they get the job done. Out van can fit our entire family and has never left us stranded somewhere. What more could I ask for?

S: Sam and Sophie. My little partners in crime! I think they were supposed to be twins. LOL!

T: Tully's, Green Mountain and Folgers K-cups for my Keurig! I couldn't make it through the day without my coffee!

U: Understanding. I think to really learn anything (from academics to theology) you have to really understand it. If you have the knowledge without the understanding, it's basically worthless. I am thankful for the understanding God has allowed me to have and to pass on to my children.

V: Video games. For 2 reasons....first, they are a good way to keep the kids busy in between meals and school and if the games are carefully chosen, they can be not only fun, but educational. The second reason is that it is a really fun way to spend family time. The wii has been a great way to get the whole family to interact and enjoy an evening with one another. Just for the record,,,,I still hold the high schore on bowling!

W: Word of God. I am still working on my goal of reading through the bible before I turn 30. I have really learned to love being in the Word regularly. I am gleaning so much. It's amazing how His Word is like a living thing, meeting you where you are.

X: I can't think of an X word, so I will cheat and use a word with an X in it: excitement. I have always been the overly excited person in the group. I get loud and giggly and happy when I'm excited. It used to bother me because everyone else was so much lower key than me. Now I am really thankful for this excitement the Lord has put in my heart and I embrace being known as the cheerful one :)

Y: Youth. My kids are teaching me to value their youth instead of wishing it away. "I can't wait until...." barely escapes my lips anymore. Instead, I'm learning to be content with right now.

Z: Zoos. Along with the farm park, the playground, the lake and all the other fun places my family can go as a field trip together. It reminds me of the fact that my children are being raised to enjoy time with their family over time with anyone else. For that I am most thankful.

Biblical Submission

i've been spending a lot of time at a forum called prairie homemaker . today i came across an excellent post by Jess that iwanted to share (with her approval, of course!).

Basically, submission in a nutshell is this:

You still have opinions.

You still have rights.

You are still a partner with your husband.

You do not nag, manipulate, or otherwise "push" to get your way if your husband disagrees with you on an issue.

You can offer suggestions and ideas to your dh, but if he says he'd rather do it such-and-such a way, then you follow his lead.

You recognize that not always having your way doesn't mean that you are a doormat.

You do not take submission to the point of allowing your husband to abuse you.

You recognize that submission is not handing all of the responsibility over to your husband and saying "have fun with the bills honey!". For some women submission means doing as her husband asks and handling all the finances. For some women, submission means letting him handle the finances b/c that is what he prefers.

You realize that to be submissive doesn't mean that you cannot work inside or outside of the home. It is an issue between you and your husband, and whatever he prefers is in your best interest.

It means if you are discussing a new car and you want the blue one and he wants the yellow and you've stated all the reasons that you think the blue is a better choice and he still disagrees, you drop it, and let him get the yellow, even if you don't think it's a good idea or just plain don't like the yellow one.

Submission is easier for some women who have husbands who greatly value their opinions, but we are all told to submit.

The Bible tells wives to submit to your OWN husband, not just any man, so it in no way means that you act inferior to men. The idea is to recognize that your God calls your husband your "head", that he is your leader, when push comes to shove.

The Bible tells men to "love your wives as Christ loves the church", also, and that's a really good picture of how it should be...submission shouldn't leave you cowering in a corner, and if it does, your husband is being abusive, and that's not okay.

Now, as for the "equally yoked" thing, it's simple. Most will agree that God was talking about marrying an unbeliever, b/c he follows that verse with "for what fellowship hath darkness with light", and talking about righteousness. The basic idea is that as a believer, it's gonna be harder if you marry an unbeliever. The unequally yoked comment immediately brings up the image of a donkey and a bull trying to pull a cart using the same "yoke". One is going to be way ahead and one lagging behind and they will struggle much before getting where they are headed.

So you hear that, and you're a believer and he isn't, does that mean you divorce him? NO. In fact the Bible also tells us that if any wives have unbelieving husbands, that we are to "win him with our actions" or something like that. Basically that we are to show him God's love, and live our lives above reproach so that he respects us and wants the joy that we have in our lives.

Bible in 6-ish months (day 36)

So my current goal is to read through the bible (front to back) before i turn 30.

to some, that's nothing. thousands of women read the bible in 90 days and (blog about it!) every quarter or so.

to many others, though, it's a big goal to have. especially if you're me. which i am.

i tend to not finish things i start. often. in fact, i've attempted to do the bible in 90 days group. twice.

it's okay. God isn't finished with me yet!

i made it through leviticus AND numbers. that's gotta count for something, right??

today was day 36.

judges 13-21 (i missed yesterday's reading, so i read 2 days worth today).

i've learned that i really like gideon and i'm more like the israelites than i'd care to admit.

Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD.....

over and over and over...............

it gets a little monotonous. until i realize it could read like this:

oh. right. that.

and He continues to work on me thorugh His word.

Makes the BEST potato soup EVER!!!

Pureed Vegetable Soup
Active time: 35 to 45 minutes | Total: 35 to 50 minutes
To make ahead: Cover and refrigerate for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
1 stalk celery, chopped
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme or parsley
Vegetable of choice (see variations, below)
Water (see variations, below)
4 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth, “no-chicken” broth or vegetable broth
1/2 cup half-and-half (optional)
1/2 teaspoon salt
Freshly ground pepper to taste

1. Heat butter and oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat until the butter melts. Add onion and celery; cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, 4 to 6 minutes. Add garlic and thyme (or parsley); cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 10 seconds.
2. Stir in vegetable of choice. Add water and broth; bring to a lively simmer over high heat. Reduce heat to maintain a lively simmer and cook until very tender. (See variations, below, for timing.)
3. Puree the soup in batches in a blender until smooth. (Use caution when pureeing hot liquids.) Stir in half-and-half (if using), salt and pepper.

Makes 8 servings, about 1 cup each.

Potato Soup:
5 cups chopped peeled potatoes
2 cups water
Simmer for about 15 minutes.

Carrot Soup:
5 cups chopped carrots
2 cups water
Simmer for about 25 minutes.

Broccoli Soup:
8 cups chopped broccoli (stems and florets)
2 cups water
Simmer for about 8 minutes.

Pea Soup:
6 cups peas (fresh or frozen)
1/2 cup water
Simmer for 1 minute.

Wondering what we've been up to during my long bloggy break?

Baby Elijah Thomas was born on April 28

My oldest turned 13

The girls moved in together thanks to the bunkbeds daddy made them :)

We took the kids to their first drive-in movie (cars 2)

We had a very fun summer. I think we did more this summer than any previous ones. I'm not aure why I was so bent on doing so much. Maybe because I knew once school started it would be hard to get me to leave the house with 5 kids in tow. We went to the farmpark, the science center, the swimming pool, numerous birthday parties (including 3 of our own), vacation bible school (pandamania) and fireworks---among many other things.

We started our school year on August 1. Austin is in 8th grade this year, Sam (officially) and Sophie (unofficially) are doing kindergarten. Maggie is picking up what she can here and there. We've also finally named our school: G.E.M. Academy-- GEM stands for Going the Extra Mile. Our "slogan" is "Going the extra mile to raise disciples of Christ". My Austin (13) came up with it all on his own :) . I will write a post when I have more time about our curriculum. Austin's is very ecclectic. The littles are doing MFW kindergarten and Saxon math. I will leave you with some pics....and a promise not to stay away so long this time. ;)

Nevertheless, I have officially decided to start posting on Wednesday nights. More than half of my family is at church every Wednesday. The two little ones go to sleep about an hour before the rest come home. I'm usually online killing time anyway. So why not?

Now, I require some accountability. I need people to post a comment or two. Let me know someone.....anyone is out there. hello?

When it rains, it pours!

i know i am a neglectful blogger (to put it generously).

i have lots of excuses though!

at least one person at a time in my family has been sick for the last 2 months or so.

currently, i am on my second go-round of said sickness.

the first go-round brought on terribly itchy hives (only in me...no one else, for which i am thankful) and they are still hanging on.

then i broke my pinky toe. or at least displaced it. we don't know for sure since i am pregnant and chose to forgo an x-ray. i've never broken anything in my life and i'm a BIG baby. so that was fuuuun stuff for all involved.

so here i sit.

37 weeks pregnant. pile of used tissues at my side. toes tapes together. scratching away.

still trying desperately to enjoy the remaining bits of my 5th (and final) pregnancy. whenever i want to curl up and cry, i just concentrate on the life growing in me and remind myself i will long for these days again in the not-so-distant future. bad patches and all.

i believe the Lord is just trying to teach me patience, perseverence and contentment.

so i will praise God for His goodness in spite of it all.

Menu Plan Monday

I do my planning on Thursday and shop on Friday, but I want to join in the MPM on I'm an organizing junkie. That being said, my meal plans will run Friday-Thursday.

Friday: Breakfast~ hard boiled eggs and toast, Lunch~ PBJ, chips and fruit, Snack~ ants on a log, Dinner~ chili, cornbread and melon cubes.

Saturday: Breakfast~ applesauce oatmeal muffins and yogurt, Lunch~ leftovers, Snack~ animal crackers, Dinner~ shrimp stir-fry, rice and pineapple chunks.

Sunday: Breakfast~ omelettes and juice, Lunch~ Little Ceasar's pizza and breadsticks, Snack~ carrots and dip, Dinner~ pork chops, salad, baked potatoes and applesauce.

Monday(today): Breakfast~ applesauce oatmeal muffins and yogurt, Lunch~ leftovers, Snack~ pudding, Dinner~ navy bean and wild rice soup with homemade rolls.

Tuesday: Breakfast~ oatmeal and bananas, Lunch~ turkey and cheese rolls ups, pretzels and pear slices, Snack~ oranges, Dinner~ hamburgers and oven fries.

Wendesday: Breakfast~ hard boiled eggs and toast, Lunch~ nachos (chips with beans, cheese and salsa) and rice, Snack~ yogurt and graham crackers, Dinner~ rotini with meat sauce, salad and garlic bread.

Thursday: Breakfast~ granola bars and apple slices, Lunch~ leftovers, Snack~ pretzels and peanut butter, Dinner~ lemon pepper tilapia, steamed broccoli and homemade rolls.

in light of the fact that we thought maggie was our last baby, we got rid of many things. then God chose to bless us with another little one. so currently i am taking stock of what i have and what we need to buy or borrow before #5 makes their debute. one thing i know i'd love to have is a good breast pump. it just so happens there is a giveaway going on over at survey junkie for a new medela pump in style. that would come in handy. say a prayer for me will ya? ;)

yesterday my oldest daughter turned 3.

you're waiting for me to say "already?!" or "i can't believe it" or something like that, aren't you?

well i can't.

if it was one of my other 3 children, maybe. they seem to age so quickly. like children tend to do.

but not my sophie.

she has aged SOOOOOO slowly! every birthday, my family and i comment about how she has been the previous age FOREVER. same thing yesterday.

"i can't believe she's only 3!"

yes, i know.

she's ageless :)

one day she will appreciate it.

what have i gotten myself into?

i have a habit of surfing the web. i loe finding new, out of the way blogsto visit. especially if they are written by people who share interests with me. homeschoolers, sahm's, reality tv lovers (shhh! that one is a secret) and especially Christians.

so the other day i was surfing along and i found myself at a blog called women living well. i really liked the things i read there. so when i saw something about an accountability group called good morning girls (henceforth called GMG). so, of course, i clicked over there to check it out.you can check it out too.

and the next thing i knew, i was signing up to post on the message boards. and then in the next instant i was posting about looking for other homeschool moms to make a group with. now this has to be Holy Spirit led, because i have a lot on my plate already so i would never sign up to do this of my own will.
anyway, i figured i'd just see if there were 1 or 2 other moms and see how long i could do it.

then the emails started.

10 other ladies!! all homeschooling moms. looking to join up with me in holding one another accountable in our devotion time.

i was amazed. and overwhelmed. and a little scared. see i'm not really good at sticking to things. case in point: the bible in 90 days challenge. i had really good intentions. but then i got behind---the SECOND WEEK. and i quit.

but now i can't quit this. there are too many other women there encouraging me and looking to me for encouragement. so wish me luck. pray for me. and i'll keep you all updated.

first week of interface

our church participates in a program called interface mentoring. it was designed by a nice lady in texas who had a heart for biblical mentoring. now churches all over the U.S. use it. including mine.

my group consists of me, two other ladies and our mentor. we learn something practical (for example, this session we are making a cleaning schedule) and we do a bible study. we've done 2 samuel, john, ruth, and nehemiah (to name a few). this session is starting off with galatians.

this session is special to me because it's my last go round. when you sign up for mentoring, you agree to a 3 year commitment. and this is the last 12 week stretch. i've learned a lot. i've grown some. i've changed plenty. i thought it would be fun to document a little about this run through. it will be nice to look back on. plus it gives me a reason to post regularly :)

so this week i read the first chapter in galatians. my subject sentance is "justification comes by faith in Christ's work on the cross". my memory verse is: "am i now trying to win the approval of men or God? or am i trying to please men? if i were still trying to please men, i would not be a servant of Christ" galatians 1:10. my action for the week is "don't be shy about doing the will of God~share His word boldly". hey---looks like i'm already doing it!

A day in the life of the Feldkamps

this post is part of the blog hop over at heart of the matter. while i realize there will be many homeschool moms reading this, i'm keepin it real and not using my caps lock button at all. i don't for my usual readers, so nothing fancy for the visitors either. that's just how i roll ;) if you're new here, i'd really appreciate it if you can follow me on google friend connect over on the left sidebar. i will visit you and return the favor :)

so, a typical day in my life? ok...here i go.

i usually get up with maggie around 630 or so. we stagger out into the livingroom. change her diaper. put her in her high chair with breakfast.

the other kids aren't usually very far behind. no later than 730 they are up and eating breakfast. chris gets up and gets ready around then too. he leaves for work by 815.

austin does his morning chores right after breakfast. then he starts on stuff he can do alone. usually that is typing, keyboard, art and math (which he's doing here):

once breakfast is cleaned up (about 830) i start school with sam and sophie. we are using the answers for preschoolers curriculum from answers in genesis for our main schooling. here they are doing math:

i often get the question of what i "do" with maggie when i'm teaching. here's one idea (learning also):

but it's usually more along the lines of this (getting stuck in the walker that is much too small for her and naively serves as a deterrent from her messing with the vcr/dvd player) :

school with sam and sophie only takes about 1-1.5 hours. then we play (or on a really good day, i clean--haha!) until 11 when i go get lunch ready. they watch a dvd and austin finishes up whatever he is working on before lunch. i try to keep lunch at 1130.

after lunch, the girls go down for a nap. sam usually has game or video time while i help austin with things such as science experiments (seen here):

when the girls wake up (around 230) we have snack. here we are eating a fun concoction with the new nature valley granola thins (that's for another post):

after snack, everyone has free time (austin is usually done with school by snack time). we're pretty unstructured.

i wash dishes around 430 and then austin dries them and puts them away. i start dinner prep at 515 most nights. we always shoot for dinner at 6 and we always eat together at the table. when chris isn't on overtime, he is home by 6 to eat with us.

after dinner is dinner time, playtime with daddy or "homework" with daddy:

then we also have various commitments during the school year (youth group, awana, karate, mentoring).

we have bible and prayer time as a family before the littles go to bed. around 715 to 730. then it's brush teeth, potty and bed for the 3 littlest.

austin can go upstairs and read or play his ds (depending on his behavior and when he's done during the day) until 930.

i use this time to watch my completely inappropriate tv shows (such as big brother and the bachelor/ette). this is also the time i fold laundry, check papers and lesson plan. chris and i try to have a regular devotion time from the book "moments together for couples" before bed.

i'm usually in bed by 10 unless chris and i have a library movie to watch.

then it's time to get some sleep (as maggie allows) and get ready to do it all over again the next day (LORD willing).

It's the thought that counts...

when people hear that i homeschool, there are 2 ways the conversation can go. either in an interested fashion ("really? why?", "how does that work?", "how do they like that?") or in a "O-oh" lets-move-on-to-the-next-subject-please.
at any rate, i've had plenty of people inquire about WHAT i use to teach my kids. one day i'm going to simply say "the Bible" and see what happens :P

for now though, i will let ya'll in on my curriculum choices for the 2010-2011 homeschool year.

i went through the "managers of their homes" book and set up a schedule this week. i'm super excited about having a pretty, oragnaized family schedule on my wall but i'm not too sure about how well we will keep on it. at any rate, i am going to try and take a picture and post it here soon. so for other homeschoolers reading this, what do you have planned for the year? link up here: :

So I have to be honest. This isn't my first time. I had a home on blogspot before that I just can't get into anymore. Long story....

So this is my new spot. All squeaky clean and brand new. Feels like a fresh start. Now, if I can just be more consistent with my blogging....
